Our History

The American School of Barcelona was founded in 1962 by Dr. Jose Maria Poal after returning from the United States. Inspired by his own experiences, Dr. Poal had the vision to open a school where teachers, students, and parents could work together towards attaining a quality American-based education. Initially located in Pedralbes in Barcelona, the school later relocated to its current location in Esplugues de Llobregat, where it has been operating since 1979. The first graduating class of the American School of Barcelona was in 1965. In 2009, ASB was proud to be one of the first international schools in Spain to begin offering the world-renowned International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, in addition to the US High School Diploma.
