The American School of Barcelona was founded in 1962 by Dr. José María Poal after spending numerous years practicing medicine in the United States. Inspired by the positive educational experience of his own children in New York, Dr. Poal had the vision to open an English-language-based American school in his hometown. This was no small feat in the middle of the Franco regime where traditional Catholic education was the rule. Initially located in the Pedralbes neighborhood of Barcelona, the school later relocated to its current and more spacious location in Esplugues de Llobregat, where it has been operating since 1978. Over the years, the school has expanded from one building with a dirt pitch for sports and recess, to three purpose-built buildings and multiple indoor and outdoor sports, arts, and recreational facilities. In 2009, ASB was proud to be one of the first international schools in Spain to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, in addition to the US High School Diploma.
