Sofia Nogués spent her entire school life at ASB, from PK3 through Grade 12. Now she's back as a parent, and this summer she's heading to the Arctic.
Sofia has fond memories of ASB's international education, teachers like Ms. Christina Torrengo (our current ECC Principal), and friends from all over the world. After studying and working internationally, she returned to Barcelona wanting the same experience for her own children.
This summer, Sofia has been selected to join eXXpedition, an all-women sailing team, on an Arctic voyage from Ilulissat to Nuuk to research microplastics in our seas and oceans. Having already sailed with the team in 2019 from Aruba to Panama, she is thrilled to have been chosen again. "It was an amazing experience. As part of my learning, I gave presentations, media talks, and community outreach to raise awareness about this issue." She has already started sharing that knowledge at ASB. Last week, her child's class made art using microplastics collected from the ocean.
Microplastics are one of the greatest unseen threats to our oceans. They absorb toxins and enter the food chain, impacting marine life and, ultimately, human health. I've been sailing since I was six, and growing up by the Mediterranean, the sea has always been part of my life. But over the years, I've witnessed a visible increase in plastic pollution, something that is now impossible to ignore. Our mission is to help uncover the source of this pollution and what we can do about it.
